Hidden in plain sight is an affront of epidemic proportions against girls. In the United States, conservatively 1 in 4 girls are sexually abused before the age of 18 with long-lasting detrimental effects. At first glance, the Unspeakable Room seems rather innocently a girl’s bedroom, but look a little more deeply and the viewer soon recognizes that something’s not right. A sinister element permeates the installation tainting the sweet appeal of girlish innocence: from ubiquitous notions of unrealistic standards of beauty and body image, to insidious predator threats designed to conceal pedophilia, ensuing emotional trauma, and bedwetting to the ultimate violations – abduction, sex trafficking and murder. Dear Womanhouse artists seek to restore the humanity and honor our victims by breaking the silence which keeps them caged, stunted, hidden and alone.
